Electromagnetic spring applied single disk NEMA flanged FN185-Square brake

For a tool machines company, MWM developed an electromagnetic spring applied single disk brake with flanged connection studied to interface with NEMA standard flanges, the FN185-Square brake.

This brake is mounted between engine and gearbox without any additional working so that can be integrated even on pre-existing machines, ensuring the complete stop of the machine itself in case an emergency brake is needed.

The biggest challenge during product design was combine the need of preserving standard brake reduced overall dimensions with the client’s engine shaft remarkable dimensions. So, an ad hoc solution was studied by using a tightening clamp to transmit the braking torque in a frictionally engaged manner between engine shaft and brake hub. Thanks to this solution it could be possible to maintain untouched the standard brake overall dimensions despite of the brake shaft increased dimensions.
